Maureen van Stone, Esq., MS, is the director of the Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities (MCDD) at Kennedy Krieger Institute and the founding director of Project HEAL (Health, Education, Advocacy, and Law), an MCDD community-based program.

Mallory Legg, Esq., is the director of Project HEAL (Health, Education, Advocacy, and Law).

Session Description

The first part of this session will cover an overview of special education law and additional protections provided to students under Maryland law. The presenters will provide an overview of Maryland State Department of Education guidance and technical assistance bulletins and share online special education law resources. The second part of the session will provide an overview of transition planning, including applicable federal and state laws and regulations. The presenters will discuss elements and goals of transition planning, including examples of quality of transition planning and how to create the transition planning section of an IEP as well as provide an overview of
transition planning resources, including state and nonprofit resources.

Objectives: Participants will be able to:

1. Identify laws relevant to special education and
summarize the eligibility and the special
education evaluation processes.
2. Describe two differences between an IFSP and an IEP and list available dispute resolution methodsPart 2:
3. Identify the laws relevant to transition and list
elements of effective transition planning.
4. Develop the transition planning section of an IEP
and identify three resources for transition
planning.
Instructional level: Intermediate

Who should attend? Professionals and anyone interested in the topic. 3.0 Continuing Education Credits (Category 1) will be granted to licensed social workers and psychologists upon completion of this training and a completed evaluation. A Certificate of Attendance will be made available for all other disciplines.

Sibshop sessions will focus on these siblings’ well-being, as they experience stressors and challenging emotions, just like parents and caregivers do. During this event, siblings will play games and participate in age-appropriate activities that promote self-confidence, understanding and empathy. Through these activities, siblings will meet other children in similar situations and provide support for each other.

Sibshops is hosted at Ronald McDonald House Charities Maryland, located about a mile from Kennedy Krieger's Broadway campus. Siblings ages 7 to 14 of patients receving care at a Kennedy Krieger outpatient medical clinic are eligible to participate.

A caregiver must remain on-site throughout the duration of the Sibshop. Caregivers are invited to participate in a co-occuring Wellness Group for adults. Participation in the Caregiver Wellness Group is optional.

The overarching goal of this training is to equip school personnel to be able to effectively support and respond to students whose lives have been impacted by complex trauma.

This module is a part of the Complex Trauma Training Consortium Master Series (CTTC Training Module #8). This project is supported by National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative (NCTSI) Category II Treatment & Services Adaptation Centers Grant # H79SM085102 awarded to Adelphi University through the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS)*. *Module developed by Megan Prahin, LCSW & Emily Neal, LCSW with support from Jeremy Karpen, LCPC.

Registered participants will receive an e-mail with instructions on how to join the session.

Target audience: This intermediate level 1.5 hour workshop is appropriate for professionals and paraprofessionals working with young children in school settings.

Learning Objectives:

Attendees will be able to:

1. Explain the concept of complex trauma and its impact on students’ attachment, self-regulation, and cognitive development.
2. Discuss strategies for creating trauma-informed classrooms, including building relationships, establishing routines, and designing supportive physical spaces.
3. Apply trauma-informed approaches to reframe challenging student behaviors and implement effective, individualized responses.
4. Analyze common student triggers and identify interventions that promote emotional regulation and resilience in school settings.

This session is part of a FREE summer training series taking place that will aid participants in broadening their understanding of complex trauma in children and adults. All those on the Training Academy listserv and who follow us on social media will receive the training announcement when registration opens. Be sure to respond quickly! Each session will be limited to 50 participants to invite a more personalized learning experience.

Presenter Bio:

Sheryl Jefferson is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker specializing in young child and adolescent trauma. Ms. Jefferson is trained in and is a trainer for Child Parent Psychotherapy, an evidenced based, trauma focused, intervention for children aged 0-5 and their caregivers. Ms. Jefferson provides reflective supervision, a requirement for Therapist trained in and utilizing the CPP intervention, to CPP Clinicians at the Center for Child and Family Traumatic Stress at Kennedy Krieger Institute. Ms. Jefferson is also trained in the Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy intervention.

Continuing Education:

Kennedy Krieger Institute, Center for Child and Family Traumatic Stress is authorized by the Board of Social Work Examiners in Maryland to sponsor social work continuing education learning activities and maintains full responsibility for this program. This training qualifies for Category I continuing education units. Social Workers will be provided 1.5 CEUs.

Psychologist:

Kennedy Krieger Institute is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Kennedy Krieger Institute maintains responsibility for this program and its content. Licensed psychologists will be granted 1.5 CE credits for the lecture attended in full.

This workshop emphasizes the importance of culture on well-being and quality of life, and how history and context are part of the whole person and should be taken into account when looking to understand someone’s experience and behavior. The training describes historical trauma and its cumulative impact and includes lessons that can be learned from indigenous communities about healing and resilience.

This module is a part of the Complex Trauma Training Consortium Master Series (CTTC Training Module #11). This project is supported by National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative (NCTSI) Category II Treatment & Services Adaptation Centers Grant # H79SM085102 awarded to Adelphi University through the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS).

Registered participants will receive an e-mail with instructions on how to join the session.

Target audience: This intermediate level 1.5 hour workshop is appropriate for beginner to intermediate professionals involved in working with youth and families that have experienced complex trauma. Some introductory background in complex trauma is useful.

Learning Objectives:

Attendees will be able to:

1. Describe land acknowledgement.
2. Describe being a good relative (stress response/trauma triggers, self-regulation/co-regulation/community care).
3. Define historical and ancestral trauma.
4. Describe historical and ancestral wellness and cultural healing.
5. Describe healing-centered engagement.

This session is part of a FREE training series taking place every month that will aid participants in broadening their understanding of complex trauma in children and adults. Presenter Bio:

LaToya Gaines, Psy.D is a clinical psychologist at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in the Center for Child & Family Traumatic Stress. Dr. Gaines services clients of all ages with a variety of relational and supportive approaches. A former school psychologist, Dr. Gaines is knowledgeable of child development and behavior. She provides play therapy and trauma-focused CBT, as well as family and group therapy.

Dr. Gaines received a Psy.M. and Psy.D. in clinical psychology with a multicultural concentration from the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP) at Rutgers University. She did her clinical internship and postdoctoral fellowship at Yale School of Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry. Her experience encompasses a variety of clinical presentations including complex developmental trauma, depression, anxiety, ADHD, psychosis, substance use, self-injury and suicidality.

Continuing Education:

This workshop covers how unconscious attitudes and various forms of social privilege can impact care and intersect with and influence outcomes and experiences related to complex trauma. Participants who complete this workshop will be able to describe the legacy of harm in healthcare and explain the revised social determinants of health framework. The presenter will define implicit bias, privilege, interpersonal racism, internalized racism and institutional racism, describe how these show up in practice and differentiate between cultural competence and cultural humility. The course includes self-reflection opportunities and techniques for mitigating implicit bias in provider-client interactions.

Jennifer Serico, PhD is a clinical psychologist and assistant professor at Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her clinical, training and research interests focus on the dissemination of evidence-based, trauma-informed, culturally humble care to improve outcomes for dysregulated youth who have experienced trauma. Dr. Serico’s work emphasizes partnering with caregivers to support youth in healing from trauma. She is a certified Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) within-agency trainer and a Child Adult Relationship Enhancement (CARE) trainer.

In addition to introducing various treatment models, the module will touch upon considerations for selecting treatment that is the best fit for a client and/or their family.

Presenter Bio:

Jennifer Shepard Payne, Ph.D., LCSW-C is faculty at the Kennedy Krieger Institute within the Center for Child and Family Traumatic Stress (CCFTS). Additionally, she is an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry, Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She founded and owns DTG Counseling and Consulting LLC, a private practice committed to helping individuals facing anxiety or trauma, with an emphasis on culture and faith.

Dr. Payne earned a Ph.D. in Social Welfare from UCLA and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with extensive experience in mental health practice. She developed a culturally tailored Acceptance and Commitment Therapy intervention called POOF™ and provides training and consultation on the model. Her book, *Out of the Fire: Healing Black Trauma Caused by Systemic Racism Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy*, delivers a heartfelt message for Black individuals and others enduring the debilitating effects of systemic racism.

This workshop reviews the prevalence of complex trauma among justice-involved youth, and applies a trauma lens to “maladaptive” coping strategies such as aggression, substance use, and self-harm. The workshop includes a focus on identifying and addressing trauma triggers, as well as ways in which direct care staff can create a more trauma-informed environment for youth and build upon youths' strengths.

3. Identify common trauma triggers for youth in juvenile justice settings, and assist youth in identifying and addressing their triggers.
4. Discuss characteristics of trauma-informed environments, including qualities and approaches needed to create trauma-informed programs, practices, and people.

Session Description

This workshop is designed for supervisors seeking to deepen their leadership and supervision practices through reflective, peer-driven dialogue. Using a panel discussion format, participants will engage in real-world questions and scenarios that explore the critical role of effective supervision in shaping organizational culture and improving outcomes for clients, families and those they supervise. The session will create space for supervisors to both give and receive practical support, share wisdom from the field, and collaboratively explore strategies to enhance their supervisory impact. Participants will leave with renewed insight, actionable tools, and a stronger sense of professional connection. Instructional level: Intermediate.

Objectives: Participants will be able to:

1. Identify key supervision practices that promote a positive organizational culture and contribute to improved outcomes for clients, families, and supervisees.

2. Explain common challenges and systemic barriers to effective supervision.

3. Discuss strategies to address effective supervision barriers through peer collaboration and reflective practice.

Instructional level: Intermediate

Who should attend? Professionals and anyone interested in the topic. 3.0 Continuing Education Credits (Category 1) Supervision CEU will be granted to licensed social workers for attending the session in full and completing all requirements. A Certificate of Attendance will be made available for all other disciplines.

Dr. Ernestine Briggs-King, PhD, is a licensed psychologist with over 25 years of experience in the fields of child maltreatment and child traumatic stress. She is the vice president of the Department for Family and Community Interventions and a faculty at Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Jennifer Shepard Payne, PhD, LCSW-C, is a research scientist and clinician at Kennedy Krieger Institute in the
Center for Child and Family Traumatic Stress (CCFTS). She is also an assistant professor in the Johns Hopkins
University School of Medicine.

Individuals with developmental disabilities are at increased risk for trauma, yet signs often go unnoticed, and care strategies may not meet their unique needs. This session will explore how trauma impacts development and behavior, and provide practical, trauma-informed approaches for both professionals and caregivers. Participants will learn tools to foster safety, trust, and resilience in home, school, and clinical settings.

These electro-magnetic tissue properties (EMTP) depend on tissue composition and organ function, and they can change in the presence of disease or disease-modifying therapies. As such, they hold strong potential as non-invasive, quantitative biomarkers for diagnosis and treatment monitoring.

guardianship. Prior to joining CPR, Megan was a senior staff attorney at The Arc of the United States and also spent over five years working at Disability Rights Maryland, where she was the managing attorney of the Developmental Disabilities, Health Care, and Victims of Crime Act Team

Session Description

This session will provide an overview of supported decision-making as an alternative to guardianship, including
a discussion of Maryland’s supported decision-making legislation. Supported decision-making has gained national and international recognition as a best practice and legal tool that can preserve the civil rights of people with disabilities and eliminate the need for a guardian in certain situations. The presentation will discuss standards for pursuing guardianship of the person and guardianship of the property. They will also discuss other alternatives to guardianship, including advance directives, advance directives for mental health, surrogate decision-makers, representative payees and powers of attorney. Resources and referrals on alternatives to guardianship and supported decision-marking will be provided.

Objectives: Participants will be able to:

Identify resources and referral sources for family and community members regarding alternatives to guardianship.Recognize how to support and accommodate people with disabilities to increase their self determination.Select appropriate less restrictive alternatives to guardianship.
Instructional level: Intermediate

Who should attend? Professionals and anyone interested in the topic. 3.0 Continuing Education Credits (Category 1) will be granted to licensed social workers and psychologists upon completion of this training and a completed evaluation. A Certificate of Attendance will be made available for all other disciplines.

Dr. Mirian Ofonedu, PhD, LCSW-C, is the director of training at the Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities at Kennedy Krieger Institute. She is an associate professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Graduate School and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Department of Mental Health. She is also a faculty affiliate of the Johns Hopkins Wendy Klag Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities and an adjunct professor at the UMB School of Social Work. Dr. Ofonedu is a psychologist, a licensed clinical social worker and a fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA). Her work spans across two decades.

For individuals, families, and communities to fully engage in services, education, and research efforts, they must first feel understood, respected, and acknowledged. Professionals who take deliberate steps to understand different life experiences and communication styles—while offering thoughtful information, resources, and support—can create stronger pathways for engagement and better outcomes. This interactive workshop introduces the “Family-as-Host” model, a framework that helps providers center humility and mutual respect when working with individuals and families whose backgrounds may differ from their own. Participants will gain practical skills to improve engagement, build meaningful relationships, and strengthen the impact of their work across a variety of service settings. This seminar is intended to meet most professional licensing board requirements of enhancing competency in working effectively with individuals, families, and communities from various backgrounds and life experiences. It also meets other Social Work Practice content as required by the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners.

David Mervis, Esq., is a staff attorney at Project HEAL (Health, Education, Advocacy, and Law), a community-based program of the Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities at Kennedy Krieger Institute. Prior to his current position, he worked for more than a decade at the Social Security Administration.

Session Description

Understanding the different disability benefits programs administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) and their eligibility requirements can be challenging for people with disabilities, their families and providers supporting them. The first part of the session will provide an overview of the various types of disability benefits available from the SSA and their eligibility requirements. The second part of the session will explore the benefits application process and offer strategies and tips for a successful application, with a focus on how providers can help. The third part of the session will allow participants to work through some common scenarios facing individuals and families applying for and receiving disability benefits. It will also help them understand how different situations affect eligibility and benefits.

Objectives: Participants will be able to:

Discuss the different types of disability benefits programs administered by the SSA and how the SSA determines if someone is eligible for benefits.Apply strategies and tips for a successful application for benefits, with a focus on how providers can help. Recognize common scenarios that may affect initial and continued eligibility for disability benefits.
Instructional level: Intermediate

Who should attend? Professionals and anyone interested in the topic. 3.0 Continuing Education Credits (Category 1) will be granted to licensed social workers and psychologists upon completion of this training and a completed evaluation. A Certificate of Attendance will be made available for all other disciplines.

The Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities at Kennedy Krieger Institute is authorized by the Board of Social Work Examiners in Maryland to sponsor social work continuing education programs, and it maintains full responsibility for this program. Dr. Daniel Dodgen, PhD, is the Senior Advisor for Strategy, Policy, and Requirements with the
Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response at the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services (HHS). His expertise includes disaster preparedness & response, health system
policy, behavioral health, and community resilience. Dr. Dodgen served as the Executive Director of
the White House directed national advisory group on disaster mental health.

The 21st Century has seen significant increases in the type and frequency of events that impact our health
and welfare. These range from public health emergencies like COVID-19, Ebola, and measles to acts of
violence like terrorism and school shootings to ever-increasing climate related disasters such as hurricanes
and wildfires. Children, especially those with special health care needs and disabilities, are among the most
vulnerable people in these events. This talk will describe some of these threats with an emphasis on their
impact on children and strategies to improve preparedness, response, and recovery for the whole
community.

The Dr. Michael V. Johnston Lectureship celebrates and honors the enduring legacy of Michael (Mike) V. Johnston, MD (1946-2022) who was a world-renowned child neurologist and research scientist, serving as chief medical officer and Executive Vice President at Kennedy Krieger Institute and professor of neurology and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for over three decades. Growing up as the son of a rural primary care physician and a nurse practicing in a small town outside of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the young Mike was exposed to medicine at a very young age. He attended Franklin and Marshall College before going on to medical school at the University of Pittsburgh, from which he graduated cum laude in 1971. His post-doctoral training included work in pediatrics, neurology, pharmacology, and pediatric neurology. He held faculty positions at the University of Michigan Medical School and University of Michigan Hospitals before returning to Baltimore in 1988. Dr. Johnston's research focused on developing therapies to reduce brain injury in infants and children as well as to promote recovery by enhancing brain plasticity. His laboratory was one of the first to describe the mechanisms through which the neurotransmitter glutamate triggers brain injury from lack of oxygen, trauma and other insults. Accordingly, Dr. Johnston's research has proved to be relevant to a broad range of Neurodevelopmental disabilities including cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities, genetic metabolic disorders, and epilepsy as well as brain injury from trauma. He also mentored countless young researchers and clinicians and was generous with his time. In recognition of his achievements, he in addition received numerous honors and awards including the Bernard Sachs Award from the Child Neurology Society, and the Frank Ford Lecture Award from the International Child Neurology Association.
