DESCRIPTION:*This event is for everyone\n \n\nOverview:\n \n\nCerebral pals
y is a heterogeneous developmental clinical syndrome. Despite “cerebral
” playing a significant component of the diagnosis\, it is difficult to
predict the physical symptoms necessary for diagnosis based on brain imagi
ng alone. While there is extensive ongoing work looking at the brain and
muscle in individuals with cerebral palsy\, there is very little work inve
stigating the role of the spinal cord. A critical component of neuromotor
control is the brain – muscle interface\, which occurs through the motor
neurons in the spinal cord. In our lab\, we are investigating the propert
ies of spinal motor neurons in a mouse model of developmental hypertonia.
In this presentation\, I will discuss the role of motor neurons in neuromo
tor control along with the role the spinal motor neurons may play in contr
ibuting to the physical symptoms of cerebral palsy. I will do this through
a combination of discussion of lived experience\, evidence-based basic sc
ience and clinical work\, along with clinical correlation. \n\n\nEducatio
nal Objectives:\n \n\n• Discuss role of my lived experience on trajec
tory of cerebral palsy research\n• Describe gaps in current definitio
n and construct of cerebral palsy \n• Integrate spinal mechanisms int
o understanding of clinical cerebral palsy symptoms \n• Develop an aw
areness of the developmental disruption of the brain-spinal cord-muscle in
 teraction in cerebral palsy\n\n\nAgenda: \n\n5 minutes - introductions\n10
minutes – Lived experience and background\n10 minutes – Gaps in CP de
finition and construct\n10 minutes – Introduction to spinal mechanisms a
nd terminology\n20 minutes – Basic science research supporting role of s
pinal mechanisms in CP symptoms\n15 minutes – Relating basic science to
clinical work supporting role of spinal mechanisms in CP symptoms\n20 minu
