This workshop will engage participants in a review and discussion of common cultural biases and blind spots when facilitating assessment and therapy, as well as provide resources and strategies for identifying and addressing bias. The presenters will provide an overview of how to incorporate the client’s cultural identity into each phase of clinical intervention, from rapport building, through intervention, feedback, and follow up. The session will conclude with an opportunity for participants to discuss how they will apply the information learned to their clinical practice.
Learning Objectives: After participation in this seminar, psychologists, social workers, and other mental health professionals will be able to:
1. List potential blind spots and areas in need of growth to foster ongoing multicultural competence.
2. Discuss environmental considerations, questions, and strategies that aid rapport development and clinical interviewing.
3. Utilize evidence-based knowledge, best practices, and cultural humility when facilitating assessment and therapy interventions, composing documentation, providing feedback, and follow up.
4. Develop specific short-term goals to address their identified areas in need of growth to increase multicultural competence.
