Special Lecture: The Brain Recovery Education Inititiative: Using School to Improve Cognitive Outcomes after Brain Injury

Dr. Bethany Johnson-Kerner is a pediatric neurologist at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital with an interest in advocacy for children with brain injury.  She leads a UCSF Pediatric Brain Center special project, the Brain Recovery Education (BREd) Initiative.  BREd aims to take a multidisciplinary approach to innovating tailored educational programs for children recovering from acute brain injury in order to maximize their cognitive outcomes.  Although started at UCSF, BREd will leverage existing collaborative networks, like the International Pediatric Stroke Organization, to organize the efforts of clinicians and educators working on similar initiatives across the country.  Bethany will speak about their work in assessing the strengths and weaknesses of Bay Area educational programming for children with brain injury, the landscape of programs nationally, and a vision for a broadly collaborative effort aimed at developing, sharing, and evaluating new educational models
